Launching Von Dubinhaus Dog Training Services 2.0

After 25+ years of transforming Portland dogs, we just gave ourselves a glow-up too. Here's what's new, what's the same, and why we're just getting started.

If you've found your way here, welcome — or welcome back. Either way, we're really glad you're here. This is the first post on the brand new Von Dubinhaus blog, and honestly, it's been a long time coming.

We've been doing this for over 25 years. Twenty-five years of reactive dogs and heartbroken owners. Of bite incidents and breakthrough moments. Of families who thought they'd tried everything — and then found us. Of dogs who were days away from a shelter or worse, who now sleep peacefully next to the people who love them. That's the work. That's always been the work.

And up until recently, we did all of that without much of an online presence to show for it. Word of mouth, Yelp reviews, Nextdoor recommendations, the occasional Facebook post. It worked — but it wasn't the full picture of who we are and what we do.

So this year, we decided to change that.

No dog is beyond help. And no family should have to give up on the dog they love.
— Paul Dubinski, Head Trainer

A Brand New Website — Built for You

We just relaunched vondubinhaus.com from the ground up. New design, new copy, new photos — a real reflection of everything we offer and everything we stand for. It was a labor of love (shoutout to our incredible web designer at Cornerstone Haus who made it happen).

The new site has individual pages for each of our services so you can actually find what you're looking for without digging around. Whether you're here because your dog bit someone and you don't know what to do, or because you just need a safe place for your pup while you travel, or because you want your dog to come home squeaky clean — it's all here now, clearly laid out and easy to navigate.

So — Who Are We, Exactly?

We are Von Dubinhaus Dog Training Services, a family-owned business based in SE Portland, Oregon. We've been here since 1999, and in that time we've worked with thousands of dogs across the Greater Portland and Vancouver area.

Our head trainer — and the heart of everything we do — is Paul Dubinski. Paul started his journey with dogs long before Von Dubinhaus existed. He was a dedicated German Shepherd breeder, producing over 25 litters from premium working and show lines imported from Germany. He then founded and ran a German Shepherd rescue program for 15 years, personally rehabilitating and rehoming hundreds of dogs who needed a second chance.

That background — the breeding, the rescue work, the thousands of training hours — shapes everything about how Paul approaches a dog. He doesn't see a "problem dog." He sees a dog that hasn't been understood yet.

Meet Luda — Our Four-Legged Staff Member

This is the story of our four-legged staff member.

One thing we love telling people about is Luda. Luda is our resident assistant trainer — and yes, Luda is a dog. 🐾

There's something incredibly powerful about dog-to-dog rehabilitation that humans simply can't replicate. Luda has a gift for communicating what Paul can't, helping other dogs find their calm, their confidence, and their trust. Some of the most dramatic transformations we've seen — dogs like Java, who came to us as a ticking time bomb and left able to play freely and socialize — happened in large part because of Luda.

When you bring your dog to Von Dubinhaus, they're not just working with a trainer. They're joining a pack.

Peanut and Butter are no longer reactive to people at all. Our walks are calmer, the constant emergency feeling is gone, and the embarrassment and fear we used to carry everywhere? Gone.

Our Philosophy — Balanced Training for Real Results

We get asked a lot about our training methods. Here's the honest answer: we use what works for each individual dog.

That means a balanced approach — combining positive reinforcement and corrective techniques depending on the dog, the behavior, and what the dog actually needs in that moment. We use treats (lots of them!), squeaky toys, essential oils, CBD, harnesses, and yes, corrective tools when appropriate. We're not ideologues. We're dog trainers.

We specialize in the cases that other trainers turn away. Severe aggression. Human and dog reactivity. OCD-related behaviors. Anxiety. Dogs who have been labeled "untrainable." That's where we thrive. Not because we're miracle workers — but because we've done this long enough to know that with the right approach, patience, and consistency, almost every dog can get better.

Von Dubinhaus' dog training techniques includes balanced training, body language & communication, therapeutic support, and aggression & behavior rehabilitation

Von Dubinhaus Dog Training Techniques:
Balanced Training - We combine positive reinforcement and corrective techniques tailored to each individual dog. No one-size-fits-all methods — just what works best for your dog and the behavior at hand.
Body Language & Communication - Your dog is already an expert at reading you. We teach you to read them back — from eye expressions to subtle physical cues — so you can stay one step ahead as the pack leader.
Therapeutic Support - Sometimes behavior goes deeper than commands. We incorporate therapeutic-grade essential oils, CBD oil, hemp treats, and other calming aids to support behavioral modification from the inside out.
Aggression & Behavior Rehabilitation - We specialize in the cases others turn away — intense dog and human aggression, reactivity, and severe behavioral issues. Our goal is simple: keep dogs with their families where they belong.

What's Coming on This Blog

This blog is going to be a place for dog owners — especially those of you navigating the hard stuff. Reactivity. Aggression. Anxiety. The embarrassment of a dog who can't be taken anywhere. The fear of a dog who might hurt someone. We've seen all of it, and we want to help even the people who haven't found us yet.

Here's what you can expect from us in the coming months:

  • Training tips and real talk — practical advice you can use at home, between sessions, or before you even book with us.

  • Dog health and nutrition — because a balanced dog starts with a healthy dog.

  • Client stories — with permission, we'll share the journeys of dogs we've worked with, because nothing is more powerful than a real transformation.

  • Behind the scenes — life at Von Dubinhaus, the dogs, the pack, and the work.

If there's something you want us to write about — a behavior challenge you're struggling with, a question you've always had, a topic you can't find good information on — reach out. We're here. We've always been here. Now we're just easier to find.

Thank you for being part of the Von Dubinhaus community — whether you've been with us for years or you just found us today. We can't wait to meet your dog. 🐾
